Falmouth, Virginia WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? I was anxious to get out of school and start working but I really didn’t know what trade to pursue. I was very fortunate to find the heating & a/c trade and great people to offer me training. HOW DID YOU END UP OWNING Childress Heating & A/C: I wanted to make my own decisions and provide great customer service. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DECISION YOU’RE WRESTLING WITH NOW? Adjusting our business plan during a very slow economy. WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WOULD CHANGE ABOUT YOUR JOB? Stress – worrying about getting new jobs, getting paid for the work we complete, and keeping our employees working. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB NOW? Working with my two daughters on a daily basis is a great joy for me. They are both so smart and talented and I can rely on them and all of my managers and staff to run the business whether I am there or not. This gives me some freedom to help my parents and in-laws and to enjoy some free time also. I have complete faith and trust in my employees to make the right decisions. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? A tough job. I like to take a challenging job and turn it into something great. WHAT’S YOUR MOTTO? Commitment to our customers that our work will be accomplished in a professional and timely manner at a fair price and that our customers will be satisfied with the final product. WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT THE BUSINESS CLIMATE HERE? We are very fortunate that this area is continually growing and changing and the military bases provide a more stable economical base than other areas of the country. WHAT’S THE WORST? The sluggish economy has still affected everyone since new construction, commercial and residential has really slowed down. We have been forced to lay off a few employees and that is always a difficult decision to make. WHO IS THE MOST INSPIRATIONAL BUSINESS LEADER YOU KNOW? WHY? Kenny Butzner, a friend, local business owner, and investor. His work ethic, integrity, honesty, and business knowledge has always impressed me. WHO WAS YOUR MENTOR? Definitely, my Dad, Elbert Childress. He was so mechanically inclined and I have learned so much from him. HAVE YOU EVER WORKED WITH A NOTABLE PERSON OR CELEBRITY? IF SO, WHO? No celebrity – but our customers are all notable to us!
